In the early days "New Light" inspired confidence in the whole scheme. Now it is laughable and unquestioning allegiance is required OR ELSE. It just wasn't quite so militant in days passed. The tighter the squeeze on personal liberties the greater the resistance. It's only natural.

What's The Biggest Difference In Today's JWs And The Witnesses From Decades Ago?
by minimus ini believe today's witnesses lack zeal, resolve, "love" of the "truth"......just to name a few things.. years ago, witnesses were excited to knock on doors and tell people they were gonna die if they didn't accept paradise.. now, when you see jws in service, they all look zombied out.. it's a slowly dying religion that will last probably forever like an ancient rotted out tree..

How did it feel to be loved by True Christians at the Kingdom Hall?
by AvocadoJake inthe love practiced by those in the kingdom hall, how can we describe it?
there are so many (yeah, there are quite a few who have intense hatred and not love.
) witnesses who hate each other, families who call down evil on each other, they wish their mother, father, brothers and sisters, aunts, uncles, grandkids, nephews, nieces were dead.

It sounds like he made some defiant choices that lead to this untimely death; "Hickem did the things expected of a "typical" teenager, such as sneaking out of his window after his father told him to stay home," "...wasn't supposed to be at the Cosmopolitan Park skate park when police responded to a call about minors drinking and smoking Nov. 11 because he had been issued a prior one-year tresspass warning" and then ran away when confronted. All these actions are the primary contributors to his passing. Young people think they are immortal and they don't think of the dangers of life. They are impulsive and sadly a few run out of luck. It was usually those without respect for authority who were "typically" sneaking out of windows when told to stay home. I knew of only one who did that when I was growing up and I was not raised a witness. Will anyone learn from James mistakes? It makes one really think about how our choices affect our lives. Sorry for your loss.

Season two is almost done. Anyone watching? Let me know what you think. Do you think any self respecting JW would watch this show? I think it would have been a guilty pleasure for me. Now its totally guilt free. How about you? Do you think they'll ever find that darn little girl? If they do, will she be a walker? Who's baby is it? Is Shane going to kill someone else? What about Naomi? (That's an old joke, trust me.)

WT Society Appoints Elders/MS Based on " Functions " Performed - not ....
by flipper in........... holy spirit or any " fruitages of the spirit " like love, kindness, mildness, meekness , etc.
shown by men considered for elder or ms positions.
qualities or true positive character traits are not that important to the wt society in appointments of these men in jw congregations.. no, the real " qualifications " that a jw man needs to exhibit is being able to report 10 hours a month in knocking on people's doors offering wt and awake magazines !

Ok Flip, you asked for my experience. That's what it was. Our congregation was very old and the only one in town. The inbreeding was severe and it was a war zone for anyone to get appointed. We had a number of MS who were career servants, one was a servent for 20 years despite wanting to be an elder, another for over 15 years despite reaching out for elder. We went 6 years without any appointments. The problem? They were not deemed bright enough to handle the responsibilities. That was my experience. If you want to extend that to ALL congregations I can't back that. Besides the "tasks" they must fullfill came the gauntlet of popularity, economic status, often education, family affiliation and if they are "reasonable". This I never understood because very few elders I knew were reasonable people. I was bright enough but not reccomended because I often called them on their bullshit. I was an MS for only three years before I was appointed and was doing all you were doing except for the family. That's a big "except". To become a Watchtower Overlord you have to give up your soul to the company. I did this till I awoke and then I was outta there. Fundementally your are correct, the Borg appoints based on works, not faith. In my old congregation there was an education bias too. Nice topic.

I've seen Ministerial Servants who have been such for 25 years or more and men who became elders in 8 years from conversion. Those who were career Ministerial Servants did one thing well, bookroom, cleaning or soundbooth. They usually weren't intellectually bright enough to meet all the "other" requirements. Those who converted and took off running usually had skills, speaking, teaching or were affable and had likeable personalities. Oddly enough they tended to have a bit more education as well. There were always those born to the breed who were on a career path who were voted in via DNA and they were usually tools. It's a mixed bag Flip. On the whole there had to be conformity but functions weren't enough in this locale.

Should Joe Paterno resign over the Penn State child sex abuse scandal?
by james_woods infirst, i don't know if we have had a thread on this yet - so if this is a repost, ignore appropriately.. but i am thoroughly disgusted by this developing scandal - an assistant coach at pen state is accused of multiple, repeated, child sexual offenses.
a member of the football staff exewitnesses and incident reported it to paterno (years ago, it is reported) - and paterno reported it to the athletic director.
nothing was done, nothing was reported to the authorities.. finally, the scandal broke over the weekend.. i am deeply dissapointed with paterno - this guy was one of my football heros.

Bad coach, bad. Agreed, if anyone knew on any level and didn't call the cops, take them out of the game and send them to the graybar hotel.
